Honors Chemistry
Course Outline and Grading Procedures
Honors Chemistry is a full year course designed to introduce you to chemical
principles that govern the world in which we live. Upon successful completion of this course you will recognize and understand the importance of chemistry in your life, develop problem solving and critical thinking skills and become aware of the potential as well as the limitations of science and technology.
Course Outline
The following topics will be covered:
Atomic structure Water Testing Formulas and Equations
Acids and bases Nomenclature Using the Periodic Table
Chemical Bonding Petroleum and Energy Conserving Resources
Physical and Chemical Properties Mixtures, Solutions, Solubility and Solvents
Stoichiometry and Formula Mass
Grading
Grades will be determined on a total point basis. Your grade will be calculated by dividing the total points you received for the quarter by the total points available. Approximate point
values are as follows: Tests = 25 %, Quizzes = 15%, Homework= 15%, Labs and reports = 20%, and CCA's = 25%.
Testing Procedures
The following conditions will be maintained while evaluations are being given. Students failing to observe these conditions will have his or her grade determined at my discretion and this may not be related to test performance. Cheating is absolutely prohibited!
No talking until everyone is finished.
Do not leave your seat until you are finished.
No sharing of books, calculators, etc.
No looking at another students work.
Materials
You will need the following:
1. A scientific calculator (supplied in class)
2. A flash drive
3. A spiral bound notebook for taking notes
4. A 1-2 inch three ring binder for handouts.
5. A pocket folder for current work.
6. A bound composition notebook for lab experiments.
All students and parents will read and sign a safety contract and classroom expectation handout before students are allowed to perform lab activities.
